Any person may become a muslim by sincerely accepting Islam's basic ''creed'':'there is no God but Allah;Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.This creed is contracted form of all the core beliefs of Islam,known collectively by the arabic title''Shahadah"(witness).But to remain a muslim they must then accept four obligatory duties,known collectively as the ibadah,thev arabic word for"state of submissiona"sometimes translated as"holy slavery"
The obligation of the ibadah were revealed to Muhammad during his period of exile and warfare and clarified by further revelations when he was ruler of macca and medina
The basic function of the ibadah,then as now,is to discipline followers for the purpose of spreading the religion of Islam and weeding out hypocrites and"lukewarm"converts.The obligations are arduous,and the practical effect is to force the believer to build his entire sicial and business life around devoyion to the religion.
The ibadah consists of ritual prayer five times a day,everyday(swalaat);payment of tax for relief of muslim poor(zakat);fasting for entire month of ramadan(sawm)and pilgrim age to the Ka'bah and other holy place of mecca(hajj)
Together the shahada and ibadah are known as the five pillars of Islam.Muslim may disagree over some the finer points of Islamic law,or the significance of events in Muslim history.But the entire body of believers accept the five pillars in they are entirety.They must be rigorously observed by muslim to avoid being sent to hell on the Day of Judgement,,,,,Wassalam wr.wb.wm Blue sky studio
